60 year old male goes to the VA hospital for extensive work up of late stage Lyme Disease. His symptoms are: central nervous system with depression, insomnia, moderate recent and long term memory loss, peripheral neuropathy, classical glove and stocking; gross intention tremor. All blood tests, spinal fluid show no abnormality and are seronegative for Bb. Was treated for 18 months in 2001 with Rocephin (2 g) and Zithromax and Flagyl. Symptoms improved dramatically. Two years ago gradual return of all symptoms. VA refuses to treat with Antibiotics because there are no detected Bb antibodies. Chief of Rheumatology says "Chronic Lyme Disease has to be seropositive to be treated.
